چکیده

A new method and application is proposed to characterize intensity and pitch of human heart sounds and murmurs. Using recorded heart sounds from the library of one of the authors, a visual map of heart sound energy was established. Both normal and abnormal heart sound recordings were studied. Representation is based on Wigner-Ville joint time-frequency transformations. The proposed methodology separates acoustic contributions of cardiac events simultaneously in pitch, time and energy. The resolution accuracy is superior to any other existing spectrogram method. The characteristic energy signature of the innocent heart murmur in a child with the S3 sound is presented. It allows clear detection of S1, S2 and S3 sounds, S2 split, systolic murmur, and intensity of these components. The original signal, heart sound power change with time, time-averaged frequency, energy density spectra and instantaneous variations of power and frequency/pitch with time, are presented. These data allow full quantitative characterization of heart sounds and murmurs. High accuracy in both time and pitch resolution is demonstrated. Resulting visual images have self-referencing quality, whereby individual features and their changes become immediately obvious.

Automatic Fault Diagnosis of Internal Combustion Engine Based on Spectrogram and Artificial Neural Network

This paper presents a signal analysis technique for internal combustion (IC) engine fault diagnosis based on the spectrogram and artificial neural network (ANN). Condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of IC engine through acoustic signal analysis is an established technique for detecting early stages of component degradation. The location dependent characteristic fault frequencies make it pos...

A Signal Processing Module for the Analysis of Heart Sounds and Heart Murmurs

In this paper a Signal Processing Module (SPM) for the computer-aided analysis of heart sounds has been developed. The module reveals important information of cardiovascular disorders and can assist general physician to come up with more accurate and reliable diagnosis at early stages. It can overcome the deficiency of expert doctors in rural as well as urban clinics and hospitals. The module h...

Seismic detection and characterization of landslides and other mass movements

Seismic methods used in the study of snow avalanches may be employed to detect and characterize landslides and other mass movements, using standard spectrogram/sonogram analysis. For snow avalanches, the spectrogram for a station that is approached by a sliding mass exhibits a triangular time/frequency signature due to an increase over time in the higher-frequency constituents. Recognition of t...

Analysis of spectrogram image methods for sound event classification

The time-frequency spectrogram representation of an audio signal can be visually analysed by a trained researcher to recognise any underlying sound events in a process called “spectrogram reading”. However, this has not become a popular approach for automatic classification, as the field is driven by Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) where frame-based features are popular. As opposed to speech...

Wavelet Based Normal and Abnormal Heart Sound Identification using Spectrogram Analysis

Abstract – The present work proposes a computer-aided normal and abnormal heart sound identification based on Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), it being useful for tele-diagnosis of heart diseases. Due to the presence of Cumulative Frequency components in the spectrogram, DWT is applied on the spectrogram up to n level to extract the features from the individual approximation components. One di...
